When Is the Best Time to Propose in Sedona
The best time to propose in Sedona is during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is pleasant. To avoid large crowds, plan your Sedona proposal during the weekday or at a more secluded location.
The Best Places to Propose in Sedona
Planning a proposal in Sedona can be overwhelming, especially when figuring out the best place to propose in Sedona. You could choose to propose during a Sedona hike or sightsee at a more accessible location. Here are some of my favorite spots in Sedona to propose:
Cathedral Rock
Cathedral Rock, one of the most iconic and popular hikes in Sedona. It is a steep 1 mile long, 700ft elevation gain hike with the most rewarding view at the end. This is not the most private spot to propose in Sedona but you’ll get some amazing pictures and have the most memorable proposal if you choose to propose at Cathedral Rock.
If you plan to propose during a holiday or Thursday – Sunday, you’ll have to take the Sedona Shuttle to get to the Cathedral Rock Trailhead. Unless you’re taking the last shuttle back to the parking lot, you’ll either have to call for transportation to pick you up or walk 2 miles back to your car.

Bell Rock
Bell Rock trail is one of my favorite hikes in Sedona because it is filled with 360 views of red rock formations and multiple scenic spots. This location is great for photos and offers more privacy than Cathedral Rock for your Sedona proposal. Here’s an example of what Bell Rock looks like during sunset.
Secret Slick Rock
This is the easiest hike in Sedona to coordinate with a photographer for your proposal. It’s a short half mile hike with a stunning view of Cathedral Rock. This location is great for any time of day to propose. When it rains in Sedona there are pools of water that are great photo opportunity too!
Airport Mesa
This is a great spot to propose in Sedona if you’re wanting 360 views of Sedona’s landscape with perfect lighting during sunset.
Doe Mountain
Doe Mountain is one of my favorite hikes in Sedona. It is an intermediate hike with lots of switchbacks but the views are worth it. This location is great for sunrise and sunset proposals.

When you hire your Sedona proposal photographer, you’ll coordinate when and where you’ll be proposing. Before the big event, plan to spend the day with your partner like normal. Maybe create a Sedona itinerary before your trip? Have a small ring box with the engagement ring with you and hide it in your pocket or shoe.
When the time comes to propose, your photographer will be hiding in a secret spot or playing tourist to hide in plain sight. When it comes time to drop down on one knee and ask “will you marry me”, your photographer will be there to capture your fiancé’s reaction without them knowing.
Hire a Photographer for a Couples Photo Session Then Propose
If you’ve been wanting to take professional photos for a while or the holidays are coming up, reach out to a photographer to schedule a photo session. During the session, wait until the middle or end to propose, that way your partner’s less likely to suspect a proposal.
Your photographer will plan with you before your session on how you want to propose. The best way to propose during a photoshoot is to either give your photographer the ring at the beginning, or plan to propose during a specific pose / prompt. That way your photographer is prepared to capture your big moment.
Have Your Proposal Photographer Pretend They Need Models
Create a scenario where you’re helping out a photographer, then propose during the session.
One fun way to catch your partner off guard with proposing is to be in the same place as your photographer and pretend you don’t know each other. Your photographer can pretend they are preparing for a proposal / photoshoot in a few minutes and come up and ask if they can use you to make sure their camera settings are correct. During that time, that would be a great time to propose and surprise your partner.
What to Wear for Your Sedona Proposal
Planning a proposal isn’t about getting dressed up and looking your best. It’s about your love for each other and documenting the next chapter in your relationship. If you prefer to look good for your photos, here are some outfit tips on what to wear for your proposal:
Hiking Attire
If you and your partner enjoy hiking and don’t mind taking photos in athleisure wear, having a cute or matching hiking outfit to propose in isn’t a bad idea. Another way to look at it, if you hiked to the top of a mountain, like Cathedral Rock, then your outfits fit the scenery perfect and go great with telling your proposal story.
Casual Outfits
Sedona is mostly red rocks and juniper trees. Neutral colors like tan, white, black are best. If you prefer to add color to your wardrobe, navy, burgundy, and dark green are great colors.
Opt for clothing you feel comfortable in and avoid large patterns or logos.
Dressed Up / Fancy Outfits
If you’re planning a more formal proposal, make sure your pants aren’t too tight and you can bend without ripping your pant seam. If you are hiking, pack your clothes in a backpack and make sure to wear hiking shoes! You can always change into your fancier clothes once you’re at the proposal location.
This is a great excuse to have your partner get their hair and makeup or nails done.
